Chew TV’s users and Content Crew have been busy watching and reviewing the current short films of the site and by doing so are automatically entered into our monthly Critical Review Comp…

The judge of the competition was Grace Randolph, a presenter, comedian and actress from New York. Grace is the creator and host of a fantastic web show called “Beyond the trailer” where she gives people her reviews of films out in the cinema, letting people know what they’re really in for when they buy the ticket, giving them an insight to the latest films ‘beyond the trailer’…. so thank you Grace!

The entries for January were shortlisted into the ‘top’ reviews and this is the one Grace considered the best…

The Winner: Richard Jones for "Lhamo Tso Behind The Sea" a Tibetan Women's Association production by Jon Lister.

Here's the winning review:

‘Behind the sea’

Behind the Sea is a TWA production by Jon Lister telling the story of a family who has been left behind without a father because he was imprisoned for making a film about the Tibetan people and what they really had to say about the Beijing Olympics. We start with the wife who has been left to look after the family by herself. As the children are at school most of the time she is very lonely at home making and selling bread. This is a very sad story but at no point does it feel patronising. It shows the family to be very strong and not looking to be giving up hope anytime on their father. The children seem wise beyond their years; the music complimented the piece very well with a good balance using both voice over and subtitles. You leave the film with hope for the family and a great insight and knowledge into their lives.

“I chose Mr. Jones' review as the best of the month because his review had many of the elements of a professional review.  He was an objective third party, i.e. not putting his own opinion into the review, and he made an effort to identify the objective of the documentary instead of simply commenting on the technical aspects.  I also felt that his review best captured the content he was covering which makes readers want to watch the content themselves”.

Congratulations Rich, your prize will be in the post shortly! Runners up were Michaela Rose, Jamie Baker and Mirium Abou- Shehada so well done to you all too!
