Voice Your Mind: Part 1

Posted: 1 month ago

The famous Toynbee hall is housing the latest Creative Campaign called ‘Voice Your Mind’, which I happen to be part of. Yesterday was the first meeting, there was a combination of old and new faces, which proved an interesting, mix. As part of this campaign all the young people involved are being trained in team management. Over the course of six weeks we will be meeting industry experts whether it is film, art or poetry we will work creatively with them to organise a showcase for young people which will take place on Saturday 4th September.

The first session was unlike anything I expected. The first initial thought was that the management training would be quite formal with people from big corporate companies coming in to talk to us. The person who ran our session turned out to be Jamaican British poet El Crisis. His poetry is intellectual and thought provoking combining song with poetry to deliver messages often focusing on gang violence and gun/knife crime, his voice managed to project throughout the room leaving a haunting effect.

After watching El Crisis perform we were all individually put on the spot to speak for 30 seconds about a subject, which was nerve racking yet exciting at the same time. Followed by a group evaluation where whoever was holding the stick got to share their thoughts (we’ve all done it) and then followed by some tasty snacks marked the end of the night. I believe as a group we’ve bonded and look forward to the next meeting. I will be giving you all a run down each week of what we get up to, so look out for it on the Chew blogs. Also join our new Facebook group: ‘Voice Your Mind’
