On Friday 5th October the Chew TV Music Tour hit Chilton Trinity School in Bridgwater. Despite the late night in Plymouth for the home coming gig, the advance video party, bleary eyed, got to the school and set up for the final day of workshops.
We kicked things off in the main hall and introduced the day to the 40 or so students who were taking part in the all day media workshops. 20 went off to learn how to VJ with the guys from AV3 media, and the others went off with Nathan Sheppard and Matt Grant to learn how to produce a music video.
Marla aged 14 explains, “Today loads of us came into the main hall and were split into two groups, my group went off to learn how to do VJing which is a bit like DJing but with visuals. The other group went off to make a music video. We got to use a mixing desk and see how it all worked, then we went out in small groups around the school taking our visuals using the video camera. When we got back we learnt how to put them on the computer, add effects and then we all had a go mixing them along to music”.
After lunch the VJ group were busy Vjing the clips that they had been out capturing around the school and turning them into a finished VJ piece. Nathans group meanwhile were putting their new skills into practice by shooting a video of the band Pinstripe. Another 30 or so students then got involved in music workshops for the afternoon, all having a chance to get involved in instrumental sessions with the band members. Rick Rogers from South West Recording and Oli James from Plymouth Music Collective then did a questions and answers session about how to get a career in the music industry. The bell at 3pm marked not only the end of another great day in school, but the last day of workshops for the Chew TV team. Our work in schools was done! It was back to Plymouth for some rest, safe in the knowledge that the good people of Bridgwater would come and see the performance in the Labor club the following evening. Long live Chew TV!

On 4th October, after a late night at Camborne, the Chew Bus turned up to a very warm welcome at Stoke Damerel Community College in Plymouth. There was even a shrine to Chew TV in the entrance and Ms Hardie even dressed for the occasion in her delightful Chew TV T-shirt.
We set up our VJ workshop and Tom Harding got cracking with a group of media students, while over in the drama studio another set of students were learning how to make a music video with Nathan Sheppard and Matt Grant. The bands arrived and Kat Marsh did a taster performance in the newly built “street” in the school (why weren't schools so nice when I was there?) to a very jeed up crowd of students.
Even more of a stir was caused when we gave out 400 hundred bottles of Volvic Revive, that had been kindly donated to the tour by our supporter Danone. TC Jefferson and Ed Whitelaw battled students who were 'queing' for their free drink. To the casual observer, you'd think they hadn't had a drink for days!
After a great day in the school where students made a music video for Kat Marsh's band, we all headed down to the White Rabbit for a phenomenal gig. What amazing bands and a great turn out. It was great to be back in Plymouth. Thanks guys!
Enough from us....this is what Josh (aged 16) and Elliot (aged 15) from the school had to say about the day......
“Today after lunch we came into the gym where we had a session with a couple of guys from the music business
It was a questions and answers about how to get a band up and running and stuff like that. Everyone was able to ask questions about the music industry and how it works. How do you get a decent band together, what sort of music should you play etc.
They went through a quick life story to do with music about their careers in the business. I am in a band so I learnt a bit about how to take my band forward. I've got a better idea about how the record industry works and how you could get a record deal. We've both enjoyed it and think its been useful. Hope the evening gig is just as good!”

Today the tour hit Camborne Community College. Could we have been made any more welcome? I think not. The whole school was simply brimming with excitement at having the bands and video guys in for the day. Our team of video practitioners managed to work with 36 year 12 media students, including having the students make a music video for local band Tempest Theory.
Pinstripe performed a set in the 6th form common room over lunch which went down a storm. After autograph sessions, they eventually made it over to the music department to get involved in sessions with students from the school!
Young promoters have been working like crazy to sell the gig out and judging by pre-sold ticket number have proved that young people can promote just as well as any old pro.
Bring on the evening gig!
Loredana aged 16 and Stacey aged 17 had this to say about the day they spent working with the Chew TV video guys.
“First thing we were shown videos that the people we were working with had already made. We were told that we would be making a video of a school band called Tempest Theory. We listened to their music and got some ideas going. Then we assigned ourselves different jobs. Everyone had something to do that was important. We let the loud people take the main role and we organised the logistics!
For the start of the video we wanted to use some younger children as we had the idea to set the video in the church where some children were doing choir practice and then the band burst out from behind the curtain. Our jobs included recruiting some cute kids for the music video. We also had to go around and find various props for the shots.
We had to keep the kids all in one place, as well as help with all the camera angles when they were shooting. I had to write the sequence of the music video and a props list.
Once we started filming it was wicked. We have learnt that it takes a lot to make a video, (more than a day!) as there is a lot to organise. I would love to be able to try this sort of thing again.

What a gig we had in Bristol!
The team of young promoters from Whitefields school had obviously pulled out all the stops to get the Croft absolutely rammed.
After a tough day of workshops in Whitefields, the tour turned up at the Croft to perform. Scientist the Orange Pip started the set with their usual energy and expertise. Next up was Kat Marsh and her fantastic band, with beautifully crafted songs and a voice to die for. Following Kat was Pinstripe who put in yet another top notch performance to get the crowd worked into a frenzy for The Naturals, the Bristol based lads who finished the night off for us. And what an act they are. No one could believe that those guys are only 15! Their levels of musicianship and performance would put most bands with years of gigging experience to shame.
A big thank you to all of the people that came along to the event and to the promoters who really made the night a success. The Chew TV Music Tour goes from strength to strength.....

Today the Chew TV Music Tour vistited Whitefields Community School in the Fishponds area of Bristol to deliver music and media workshops.
Jay Aged 14 from the schools explains what happened:
“We had a bassist from a band called Pinstripe who came in and taught us a a bit of bass and we asked him some questions. He told us all about how he has been at college and its hard being in a band and being in college as well as working in two jobs to support his band.
He explained how he has had offers to get the band signed and he explained the process of the record companies sending a him a contract, then him sending it to his lawyers and then them sending it back and forth. I found it helpful as I learnt some new stuff as well as a couple of bass lines and a lot about the industry.
I missed the lunch time gig but according to my friends it was really good. We have also had a session with Oli James who works in the music industry. He is explaining all about the music industry and jobs that exist in it. He asked us if we were interested in working in the industry and if so what we fancied doing. He was also there to answer any questions that we might have about the music world and what we could do in it.
I thought it was really good, I learnt quite a bit. I used to play bass but I stopped for about a year. After today I've decided to take it back up again. Its been a useful day, I think everyone should have the opportunity to experience this sort of thing, especially young people who are not sure which direction to go.”
Lis Jolley, music programme leader said of the day “students worked brilliantly with professionals from the music industry. They particularly enjoyed the VJ sessions and saw lots of opportunities of how they could incorporate it into their own work, both music and art. The lunchtime concert was a success and the vocal workshop was buzzing with harmony! Students particularly enjoyed using their own instruments when working with the bands.
Five of our students have worked relentlessly over the past two weeks promoting the evening gig. They seemed a little nervous today hoping that as many people as possible will turn up after their hard work. They contacted all of the local media with the story, they targeted organisations and schools and spent weekends handing out flyers on Park Street and College Green. They enjoyed the process, found it hard work but have learnt a lot from it.”

On 1st October after a weekend to recuperate, the Chew TV tour hit Exeter on Monday morning.
Sophie aged 14 and Clare aged 14, had a few words to say about the time they spent with our two VJs Tom and Naomi Harding from AV3:
Sophie explained “I've been making different effects with the camera, pressing lots of buttons.... We went around getting different shots from around the school that we could then capture on to the machines, Then we added good effects using the equipment. It was really cool learning how to manipulate video images.”
Clare added “We were told we would be doing VJing, which stands for visual jockey it is like a DJ but with V instead of a D and involves mixing video clips to music.
One of us had the video camera and was filming around the room we were in and then we put effects onto the live camera and learnt how to use the equipment.
We got to see examples of VJ work. I enjoyed doing the filming and putting effects on the video. It was great to experiment with different ideas, some of which worked well, others didn't look as good but we gradually got the hang of it.
Now we feel able to use cameras. I now know how to mix visuals too. I'd like to do it again, it was much more fun than double geography and a science test. Tonight we are going to see the bands perform live at the Phoenix arts centre in town.”

Today the tour hit Sandwich. After a late night performance in Southampton, followed by a lovely long journey afterwards and a few hours sleep in a Travel Lodge the Chew TV crew turned up fresh faced at Sandwich Tech at 8.30 to run a set of workshops.
Tom and Naomi from AV3 took 15 students on an all day VJ session, teaching them how to use the equipment, how to capture footage and how to ad effects. Matt and Nathan led a session for year 12 media students about making a music video. The students then created and shot a music video using Scientist The Orange Pip, one of our three tour bands.
Kat Marsh (pictured) gave a brief performance over assembly and in the afternoon the other bands offered instrumental workshops to a mix of ages on drums, vocals, and bass guitar. There was also a questions and answers session led by Rick Rogers and Oli James who could offer their wealth of music industry expertise to the next generation.
In the evening was a fantastic and really well attended gig, which also featured a local school band and had some top VJing from students. Then all the gear was stuck back in the van and the VERY long journey back to Plymouth was begun. Next stop Exeter.........

On 27th September Chew TV Music Tour visited Redbridge School in Southampton. Students from the school had this to say about the visit:
"Today we made a video for Kat Marsh. We all watched some videos that Chew TV have made previously. We then went and filmed the video. Everyone got a go on the equipment and it was really fun. I did some work on the camera and lighting. I also got to make a mini documentary you can see on Chew TV".
Lewis Year 9
"This morning at Redbridge some people came in and taught us how to VJ. It is very good experience. It is not easy but we all got there in the end and we mixed our own videos".
Dan year 9
"We have been working on a music video and it took a while to get to good at using the equipment but we all had a go and made a great video."
Brody year 9
After the workshops Chew TV moved on The Red Lion pub in Totton and did a sell out gig with fantastic local bands Loose E and Organised Chaos. Local act '01 Know One' finished off the night and then Chew TV packed up and headed off to deepest Kent!

Today we had a talk from 'AV3', a VJ company on what they do and how much fun they have, they showed us all the work they have done for the band pendulum. They showed us how each component works individually and how the visuals go with the music. Then they showed us how to have a go and we had a play.
We had a different person on each bit of kit and had a beat playing and a few songs and we mixed visuals to the music. Being in a theatre company myself I have thought of loads of ideas about how to use the ideas on stage and to put it to different uses other than straight Vjing.
Ashley aged 18
We watched a presentation about Vjing then we watched the other guys have a go and tried ourselves. After that we mixed music and visuals together to music with all the different effects.
I learnt how to do Vjing, it has given me a few ideas on how to use differrent effects. I definitely think that more people should have this experience as it is great fun but not something that you would think about doing. Tom one of the Vjs from AV3 recorded the clip that we mixed and it will go on Chew TV.
Rosie aged 17
We've been making a music video today. We learnt about filming techniques and filming angles and the film industry. I got involved in the workshops from 12.20 until the end of school. I have been working with a band called Scientist the Orange Pip with help from Nathan Shepherd and Matt Grant who are professional music video makers. We filmed some solo performances for a music video. Nathan also talked to me about how to get into the film industry and gave me some useful tips. This has been really helpful to my future progress and......... stuff like that you know.
This is a great project I really hope it continues.
Michael aged 16
Media teacher Richard Allen said of Chew TV's visit “What a great experience for the students, the Vjing left my year 9 drama student buzzing, all kids regardless of ability came out enthused , the mix of music and visuals was a real hit. Also its a fantastic experience for the A level media boys who were doing the music video and it was really relevant to their course.”
Jane Turner Community Arts Coordinator at Windsor Boys added “This is a great opportunity to work with professionals in the media industry. They really inspired the students and gave them a glimpse into what it is like to work in a professional environment. Some of the boys have been really inspired to go home and have a go. It has given them a passion and they now have the knowledge and means to go ahead and do it on their own. It has provided a taste of what is possible. Some of them had never heard of a bass guitar until Chew TVs music workshops, most including me have never heard of Vjing, it has shown our students loads of possibilities.”
After the workshops all three bands performed a live gig at The West Wing in Slough

This morning, Nathan, a music director, showed us different examples of music videos that he had directed and worked on. There was an interesting mix, and this helped us form ideas of our own, as to what we wanted to do later on in the day for our own video. While showing us examples, nathan gave us a running commentary on the use of different camera angles and told us about the different styles of film used, we then got shown the cameras we would be using for the filming of our music video. Nathan explained to us how to use them, and showed us some interesting techniques to add a bit of style to our own video.
After we had been given some technical information, and shown how to correctly use the cameras, we brainstormed some ideas, and started filming. After some very interesting shots, using one of the schools bands (with a little help from our P.E department) we got to a point where we were happy with the filming we had done, we then edited the video. Nathan and Matt made the day very interesting and informative, we learnt a lot about the different techniques, and how to use the cameras, but also we had a lot of fun filming our own videos, with the expert help of Nathan and Matt.

The blog below was written by Ali and Mitch from Maidenhill School in Stroud.
Today people from Chew TV came to Maidenhill school. Instead of my media lesson this morning I worked with a couple of people learning how to VJ.
We used the camera, video effects and learnt how to remix and add effects into videos.
We saw a sample video of people working in the rainforest, in it we clips of people doing different jobs like a chainsaw guy chopping trees and a womon singing. Where the VJ had edited the video it sounded like a beat in the background but really it was just the noises on the video of the chopping.
They also gave us a free wrist band and a free CD which I am going to listen to tonight before the gig!
Ali aged 15
This morning I had media for a lesson but instead of a normal we learnt to VJ with some profesional VJs. We got to watch remixes of Blair and Bush sing eternal love. We then got to remix our own videos and have a go with all the equipment.
Last lesson when we normally have drama we were recording a music video with a professional band from Chew TV and the video will be screened on Chew TV.

This video gives an insight into the visit Chew TV paid to Coppice School in Wolverhampton on 18-9-7.Posted in Music on the Tuesday, September 18, 2007
The Chew TV Music Tour came to my school Coppice Performing Arts School in Wolverhampton today.
All of us were taken out of our normal lessons to learn how to make a music video using a real band with the help from video experts. First off we got to practice using cameras and then after about an hour we came into the hall and helped to set up all the graphics and projectors etc. After that we got our hands on a camera and me and my friend made a 60 second video filming each other and people around us to get familiar with the cameras.
Then we went back stage and worked with the video practitioners to plan what we were going to do. We worked with Matt and Nathan and started talking to the sound crew and found out what they were doing. We figured out exactly what we would do after lunch when the band would be ready for us to shoot!
We had agreed on what shots we would do, some at the front some at the back and some from the back. At the back there was Ben and Luke. At the front there was Andy and Dan, round the back was me and Ashley.
I have learnt about what happens behind the camera and what it is like to actually be filming. I've learnt about how to use a proper professional camera and as well as understanding what each camera can do and what kind of extra equipment you need for it.
Its been really exciting and i have really enjoyed it. Its been really fun going around with the cameras and I felt I was actually working in a proper job rather than being at school.
I've given lots of thought to doing it as career. Check out our video soon to be on Chew TV!
Josh aged 14.
